Is the Japanese government still going to give away free airplane tickets starting in April?

I read in the news after the tsunami disaster in Japan a year ago that the Japanese government was talking about giving free round-trip airfare to travelers starting April 2012. It said that a number of tickets would provide free round-trip airfare to travelers flying to Japan in order to boost the tourist industry which has fallen since the disaster. Is the government still planning to do this? I know that only a limited number will be given. I also know that you must blog about your vacation in order to get the free airfare, because the whole point is to restore the Japanese tourist industry. Is this plan still going to happen? If so, how can I apply for one of these tickets?

Hello Brandt, Unfortunately, that idea was crushed in December. It was originally planned to encourage people to blog about Japan and raise awareness of the country after the March 11th disaster. It was a good way of creating interest and buzz about Japan while it lasted.

Unfortunately, as the other's have stated, the offer has been closed. Which is really upsetting. As an English major, I was psyched to hear that the requirement was writing a blog about the trip. When/if I ever go to Japan, I'll probably write a blog just for fun!!!

Unfortunately not anymore. It would have cost Japan lots of money, and it was receiving criticism from citizens and people from all the world because it was believed that they were going to use the money being donated to pay for people to go to Japan. People thought they should spend the money on their recovery than on tourists which is true since they would end up spending more money.

No, that died a quick death. The tickets weren't free either. The idea was to write a blog as to why you wanted to go to Japan. You were also supposed to write about your trip once you got back. So unless you had some writing ability, you would have never had a chance.

No - unfortunately for us, it was scrapped due to lack of available funding. In it's place, ANA launched the (much, much cheaper) "Is Japan Cool?" web campaign. Visitors to the site judge if featured Japanese trends & cultural institutions are "cool" or not & they host contests to win free round-trip tickets to Japan.

No, the idea was floated but didn't get included in the budget.
