Lost passport while abroad?
I'm a UK citizen currently in Bulgaria, and over the weekend I misplaced my passport. Today I went to the police to notify them, and they are now in the process of making the report. After the police, I went to the British embassy in Sofia, who advised me that the police would be cancelling the passport, so the embassy didn't need to. Maybe it's an EU law/rule or procedure, I'm not sure.
Anyway, I was told to go back to the embassy in 2 days to apply for an emergency travel document to get me home, on Thursday. I was told to take the police report, amongst other things.
Anyway, since coming home I have found my passport but it was too late as the police station was closed and they didn't answer the phone, so they couldn't be informed. My question really is about the police, would the passport really be cancelled as they processed the report?
No, sorry, I meant my home here in Bulgaria, I am due to fly back to my UK home on Thursday, hence the panic.
It was the embassy that told me the police would be cancelling, but I just need to know for sure that they could.
It did sound feasible as both countries are part of the EU, and all these government departments/police forces work together now.

What a coincidence I happen to be Bulgarian! I don't know the Bulgarian judicial system fully, but they shouldn't have cancelled your passport. Best thing to do is go to the police or embassy to check.

Never believe anyone, especially local authorities, when it comes to your personal documentation. Imagine if you lost your Visa bank card and told the local police and they said they would cancel your card and you do not have to do anything. Would you believe them? No, you would not, you would make sure that the card was cancelled yourself in order to have complete peace of mind. Contact the Embassy, and tell them that you have found your passport and ask if it is still valid for use. If it is, then you have nothing to worry about.

In this currrent time of global terrorism and the value of a British Passport to someone who is not British and wishes to cause harm, you have to assume that the document has been cancelled, as you've been told. You can use it as proof for obtaining a new passport but I would certainly not attempt to travel on it.

So your back home now. You just need to verify if your passport is still valid. There should be a passport office there in the UK that can verify if your UK passport is still valid. That is the only way you will know for sure.
