Most dishwashers can be serviced but will the repairs be almost as much as a new dishwasher?

Your question is not a dumb question but you left out very important details.

Make and Model of the Dishwasher and country and your approximate area.

Without this information, anyone answering your question is guessing

First, check the obvious. Is there power to your dishwasher? Check the fuse/circuit breaker for the dishwasher.

Is there water available for the dishwasher? Has the shutoff valve inadvertently been shut off or is the valve broken?

You can call an appliance repair tech in your area to come out and service your dishwasher. Be sure to get a quote first. Sometimes the cost of repair may be more than the dishwasher is worth.

Does it do anything, meaning come on and make noise, or just sit there? If it doesn't do anything check to be sure the door is locked closed, next that there isn't any flatware stuck anywhere blocking the arms from moving. Next check your breaker panel to be sure the breaker is on, and if you have a switch on the wall or under the cabinet that seems to do nothing is turned on. Sometimes a homeowner might wire a switch to control the power going to the d/w. Another thing to check is if the water valve under the sink is turned on ( full counter clockwise) it is usually attached to the hot water feed line. If it has electricity, has water, and doesn't turn on you have a decision to make. When you look at it, does it have a dial on the front, push buttons, or a digital screen. Digital screen means it isn't too old, dial or buttons could mean old. See if anywhere you can find a model number and with that name and model number you can figure out how old it is online at Google. If the d/w is more than 10 years old, it is worth getting a new one as the repair cost wouldn't be worth it, and the technology is much better today using less electricity and water. Most big box stores have an install deal when you buy a new d/w and will usually take the old one out.

once you're saying there is grit (sand) present day and you have low stress on the nice and comfortable water area, it appears that evidently such as you have problems including your water heater. Water stress would desire to be an analogous the two warm or chilly in the experience that your water heater has assorted sediment in it it could shrink down on the quantity of water popping out lowering the stress. whilst the washer makes use of the nice and comfortable, (assorted the time) the jets won't blast the dishes clean and the jets themselves possibly partly clogged by using grit you suggested. you would be able to desire to envision the water the two out and in of your heater by using fact if it is the subject then a clean dishwasher will ultimately clog as much as. Plus in case you have assorted sediment on your heater it is going to burn out quickly to. you're saying you have a water softener that doesn't artwork. If it does not artwork and your no longer likely to repair it eliminate it. it fairly is probably clogged up. The water therapy plant does not take care of for no longer uncomplicated water (it is why you have/had a water softener in line) all they take care of for is micro organism and attempt for chemical compounds like insecticides. Your subject is probably the two on the enter water to the washer and the washer it fairly is self. you are able to take the jets out of the bathing device and clean them with something like "lime away or CLR" yet whilst your enter water has sediment in it they are going to clog up returned. So will a clean washer.

Yes you can call a repairman in but it will be like $60 and hour. If you can take it in you will save money but get an estimate first.
