Because conservatives are quickly running out of options, they desperately want to find a candidate that isn't Mittens, as they do not fully trust the guy, and I don't blame them given his record of flopping around like a carp all over the place! Mitt is the John Kerry of 2012.
There is Gingrich, but his own party booted him out of the speaker position in the 90s. The fact that Newt has walk- in- closets full of skeletons, supersedes the fact that he is probably the best debater.
Ron Paul has many great ideas, but I think the American mainstream isn't quite ready yet to embrace the kind of change that Dr. Paul advocates.
So while Santorum may not be the ideal conservative candidate, he is light years more conservative than Mittens. But when you examine Santorum, his past is just as bad, if not worse.

The most effective a type of applicants that has any danger of attracting electorate from the Democratic part is Ron Paul, and it does not appear like he would be the Republican alternative. When the country is continually 50-50 Democrats and Republicans, you have to draw in the ones unsure electorate. I have not watched a debate for decades, however the final one I watched, Ron Paul wiped the ground with Romney. Romney is a further a type of folks whose speeches and solutions are canned, practiced, and stuffed with platitudes. Ron Paul feels like he has a mind. In an technology wherein Republicans have embarrassed themselves with George W. Bush, Sarah Palin, and Joe the Plumber, they want a robust, wise, squeaky blank teller of reality.

There are some marginal Republians who feel that the problem with our country is that we are forging ahead too fast which is what happened in Iran when the Shah was thrown out of his country and in Afghanistan when the Taliban took over. Going backwards is never a good idea especially as we are competing on the world market. In about 50 years China will be a full industrialized rather than farm country. India is forging ahead with its technology and people "brains." What made our country strong are the innovators and creators; not the people who believe in creationism!

Because Mitt is just like Obama it is just like cloning Obama and having Obama's clone run as a republican. face the facts Mitt Romney invented Obama care, had Massachusetts become the first state to allow gay marriage, raised taxes and supported abortion when he was Governor.
Rick Santorum is not like Obama Santorum has true american values.

He needs the religious fundamentalists to vote for him in the primary. That is the only way anyone would vote for him. All three of them profess to be right-wing and none of them believe in evolution and probably not climate change either. The statistics on one TV show revealed that only 12% of people in Alabama or Miss thought Pres Obama was Christian.
We are not third world, just in the Middle Ages since 2000. All this emphasis on religion must reflect some very deep fears the part of Christians. They see the killing of U.S. soldiers in the Middle East as the Muslims' fault and think it is fine to kill people by remote control in several countries. Only if Americans are killed does it matter.
Sickos.

So far he is not a primary winner. He is running for Pope of Popes and hopes to get all of the
right wingers votes.

He is not winning the primaries. He is winning caucuses, smaller contests in states that are more driven by fundamentalist Christians on the GOP side. He is behind Romney on the overall race and can not win, though he and Gingrich can make for a fun show at the GOP convention if they stay in the race.
