Tornado Shelter, Safe???

My grandapa has a underground storm celler but its really old, how safe is it????? can it be sucked out from the ground?? Would it withstand an f5????? I live in central Oklahoma, prone to strong tornados lol

Update:

also part of it is above ground like about a foot in a half is this normal??? thought it was but not sure, but is mostly below ground

Sounds as if you would be perfectly sate in such a shelter even given the storm was an F5 but lets hope neither your grandpa nor you ever have to test it out.

The major threat from a tornado is flying debris which is why you're safest when underground.

If an EF5 passed directly overhead...there's probably no place safe to hide; however...the chances of that happening are small.
