Why does Obama think the average American spends $16,000 per year on gas?

Is he really that out of touch?

Details: In Obama's latest energy speech he said that his policies will require that cars and trucks double their fuel mileage. Then he said this would save the average American $8,000 per year.

Update:

$16,000 per year is over $300 per week! I am sorry but the average person spends no where near that

Update 2:

Yeah you guys are right he did say over time though to hear him say it a year was implied. Over time is a total wimp out though you have got to admit. Saving $8,000 a year is a far cry from over 10 years or more which is more accurate. I guess since not too many people would be excited by saving $8,000 over 10 or more years he had to play with his phrasing. Such a typical politician

I'm not sure where he got that number. Perhaps he is factoring in the transportation cost of goods and services purchased along with the money saved at the pump. The claim sounds rather dubious.

fdm215 has done your research for you. When you hear a journalist quote a politician, be sure to check the quote, especially if that "journalist" is Glenn Beck.

Read your source. The quote from Obama is:

"That means folks will be able to fill up every two weeks instead of every week, saving the typical family more than $8,000 at the pump OVER TIME,"

    (Emphasis mine.)

When you talk about a quote from a politician you should quote them directly rather than offering a paraphrase.

I doubt Obama said that. And, you seem to have forgotten to post your source...as per usual.

I found the speech, and as I suspected, Obama did not say save $16k/year. He said save $8k over time by owning a higher fuel efficiency car. Nice try.

Probably family. Why exactly do you have a problem with getting better gas mileage? We all know they can do it.

    Some do, some don't.
