2005 Honda Metro 2 scooter...?

My scoot just doesnt really want to go...sometimes it will go for a little bit and then it backfires and dies and will not start again. Also sometimes when i start it up and start to go it just dies...We have charged the battery and changed the spark plug...but still the same issue. Could it be the fuel filter (that was suggested to me) any ideas as to what may be causing this and how to fix would be appreciated. I miss riding my little scoot. ;) thanks.

    Difficult to tell without being there but here's a short check-list-

    Clean/new fuel-filter.

    Clean/new air-filter.

    Change oil/oil-filter.

    Pull the spark plug to see what the combustion in the cylinder is trying to tell you.
