I wrote a story for a university assignment now I want to publish it?

I wrote a story as part of an assignment for university. The story really grew on me and I have developed it more so and want to publish it as a novel in the future. I was wondering what any if any legal issues there would be. My lecturers says the university technically owns whatever we submit, but they have never heard of any situation where the university has followed up on anyone using something they submitted as part of an assignment. Its not like I even wrote a full story for my assignment, just a plot overview which I now want to turn into a full on novel.

Update:

I study computer games design. For my dissertation I am creating a games deign document which is essentially a manual for a developer to create a game. The story isn't even the focus of the GDD, its the academic research part where I talk about game theory that is the bulk of my dissertation. The story is not an actual narrative, just a plot overview for the game.

Did you write a story or a plot overview?

If you wrote a whole story as part of an assignment at the level that it was bound and turned into a thesis, it's probably legally been published already and you would need to tell any publisher that you submitted to that it had already been published.

If you only wrote a plan, go for it. Ideas can't be owned.
