Is Julia Fischer a much better fiddler than Nicola Benedetti..?
in your humble or otherwise critical opinion.
muchas gracias
mephisto
@del : I was listening to Fischer play Paganini's Opus 1 Caprices.
Never listened to these before and have to admit they didn't really have me in ecstasy (I'm a Symphony man first and foremost : ) but her playing was something else and I was just curious as to comparisons with Benedetti, an artist I am somewhat more familiar with (well I have her first three albums but nothing since) but who's playing technique didn't quite leave me as astounded as Fischer's.
Of course completely different repertoire don't help.
P.S Hilary Hahn, oh yes I remember thy warning and seeking thy expertise further
as there are a lot of young violinists around, is Janine Jansen worth checking out ?
Have you heard Patricia Kopatchinskaja's recording of Beethoven's Concerto, really wonderful if you can forgive the multi tracking on the cadenza.
@del : Jansen has released a Beethoven/Britten concerti disc coupling and I'm completely unacquainted with the Britten ( :

Gosh, mephy - what a question. I enjoy listening to BOTH of them - they are both fine players and musicians. Perhaps Fischer is a little more 'seasoned' than Benedetti (she's a few years older), but Benedetti has come on in leaps and bounds since winning 'BBC Young Musician of the Year' eight years ago.
Don't make me choose, Mephy - you know how I hate to choose. I would prefer listening to EITHER of them in preference to the technically brilliant but ice cold Hilary Hahn.
I would be interested to know what prompted your question.
EDIT: I have actually worked with Janine Jansen (who is a complete sweetheart). She has a fiddle which has a small-ish sound, but there's no lack of fire and passion in her playing. She's a wonderful artist!

They are both accomplished musicians and it is probably too early in their respective careers to say which is better (if it is not a matter of personal taste)... OK, so I chickened out....
