Can I transfer files from Mac to PC with ethernet?

I want to move all of the files on my Mac (OS 10.5) to my PC (Windows 7), while I upgrade the OS. Then I want to move them all back. I have an ethernet cable and no idea how to proceed.

Update:

@minetooine Thanks, but I do not have crossover cable.

@Duncan I plan to do a clean install, but either way, I would back up my files.

@Harness I do have a second cable and a router, so I will follow your advice. Thank you.

@seymour It is more than 100GB, so email, or any online solution would take way too long.

Thanks, everyone.

What would make this easier is access to a home or business network. If you can plug both computers (you'll need 2 ethernet cables, obviously) into a switch or router they will probably be assigned different IP address in the same subnet and you're halfway there.

After that the procedure would be as follows:

On the PC, Hold the Windows key down an press R.

    Type cmd and click OK

At the command prompt type ipconfig <Enter>

Note the IP address of your Local Area Connection

Open Window Explorer and right-click any folders you want to transfer and share them

    Open Finder on the Mac

Select Go / Connect to Server

    Enter smb://<ip address>

You should see the shared folder you set up.

If you have a standard ethernet cable then you cant do this, you need a special crossover cable, normal ethernet cables are wired to have a router, switch or hub in the middle. With the crossover cable you connect the two together, turn on the sharing on the windows machine and from the mac one use explorer to navigate to the pc's IP (you might need to give it an ip address) copy them over do the upgrade and copy back...

Upgrading the Mac OS will only overwrite the system files it will not affect the other files on the hard disc unless you decide to wipe the hard disc.

Between two Macs it will be plug in and go but introducing Windows into the equation opens a can of worms. Depending just what you have got on the Windows box you will probably need a crossover cable and then set up ad hoc networks to get the two talking to each other.
