What dog should I get?

I have had 2 terriers for the last 4 years (1 westie and 1 yorkie x westie) and they were lovely dogs. I had a little boy and regrettably had to let one of them go cos it was too much with him. We were left with the westie as she is very docile but she started snapping at him so she had to go. I do miss her but obv my sons safety is paramount. I would like a dog (not a terrier) that I can have around him that I dont have to worry and not too big. Any recommendations welcome

Thanks

    A Dog Is For Life.

They are not a disposable accessory that you can just get rid of when inconvenient, and then replace.

You've already got rid of 2 dogs because you couldn't cope.

    Don't get any more.

The giant breeds are awesome with kids. The Great Dane, Mastiffs are really sweet too. The bull Mastiff is really suppose to be very nice too. The retrievers are all known for their sweet ways. Like the Labrador or the golden. The hounds are really great for kids too. The beagle, Basset, and bloodhound are all very sweet. The pug and Boston terrier are very sweet to in small breeds. The female Shar Pei might be a good choice but don't get a male he can be very aggressive. They are very sweet to their owner and clean dogs too.

A nice even tempered rescue dog would be best but I don't expect they would let you have one with a little kid. Rescue people are very wise about stuff like that.

It isn't just that terriers can be little tyros, any puppy can be. I think you need a Retreiver type that can be taught to interact willingly. A good half-sized one is the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever - they just love water too and are excellent for a kid to grow up with.

You can take a trip to the nearest shelter and take your son with you. Test out the dogs and spend some time with them. See which ones warm up to your son and make sure they are friendly and not shy. Shyness is a symptom for possible aggression in dogs. If you are worried that any of the dogs will bite your son in the process, tell one of the workers who knows the dogs about your situation and ask them which of the dogs might be best for you, then introduce your son to them to make sure that the dog is good for you.

I would agree with Maia dogs don't randomly snap at people unless provoked whether that be jealousy or being teased/hurt I would just wait until your son is older and understands before you get a dog .

    Check this website out! http://www.justdogbreeds.com/

It has a dog breed selector (Its basically a quiz on what dog could be right for you) Do that first and then have a look at the breed. This is also quite the same: http://animal.discovery.com/breed-selector/dog-bre...

    Hope I helped :-)

Why dont you adopt a dog from the RSPCA? If it dosnt work out they are obliged to take it back and you wont have trouble rehoming it if it dosnt fit in with your son? Or be a pet fosterer?

This quiz at http://animal.discovery.com/breed-selector/dog-bre... has a really neat and helpful quiz on what dog breed would be right for you and your family. It asks questions like what size dog you want, training ability, how affectionate you'd like it to be, etc. Then, it matches you up with a specific breed! Hope this helps, it did for me!

Dogs don't randomly snap at humans. They do at other dogs but only if provoked at humans. I would suggest you don't buy another dog as your child may be the cause of the problem.

i would recommend a chiawawwa or a bichon freeze x scnowsher
