Can a yeast overgrowth cause your body to produce antibodies against yeast?
I went to see a nautropathic doctor recently to find out what may be the cause of my extreme anxiety (I am on the antidepressant Prozac, which does help but my psych told me it wouldn't be a bad idea to consult with one of these doctors to determine a possible cause.) anyhow she ran some bloodwork on me, and the results showed that I had a candida overgrowth in my GI tract. Because I had antibodies in my blood against yeast, she also said that I am allergic to it. However i don't remember having any negative reactions to yeast or to any type of food at all, so I went to see my primary doc to see what he thinks. He said that I do have a sensitivity to it, but not necessarily a true allergy. The nautropath recommended I take tannalbit (a supplement supposed to kill yeast), and acidophilus as well to help restore the good bacteria. So one of the questions I have is once the yeast is under control, do you think my body will still react to it? Also do you know some things I can do to prevent the overgrowth from happening again?

Hello Bethany!
Your body can fight yeast yes and so it rightly should. Many yeasts can extremely harmful to the body although there are beneficial yeasts as well. But do not worry because you are not alone... it is estimated that 90% of americans have yeast overgrowth. Yeast overgrowth is dangerous because it is not natural to how we humans are supposed to function we are meant to have trillions of bacteria in our gut working together with certain beneficial yeasts but when yeast overgrowth occurs it creates a "Yeast empire" if you will... and in turn it lowers your immune system response and more importantly it does not absorb nor synthesize your food correctly. You see the beneficial bacteria in your gut helps synthesize vitamins and nutrients so that your body can use it to create a healthier you. Beneficial bacteria in your gut (flora) also helps keep malicious yeast at bay... but what happens is your doctor prescribes you antibiotics to get over your mild infection and antibiotics don't spare the beneficial bacteria... they kill everything (except the yeast). So now with all the good flora constantly dying every time you get sick, the malicious yeasts are given a prime environment to reek havoc on your body. Anxiety is a very common symptom of overgrowth its a way of telling your body it is not comfortable with the environment it is currently in.
So what can you do?
First off- only take antibiotics from your doctor if you feel like there is no way your body can take care of yourself (which is rare). And furthermore after you rid yourself of the "bad" yeast (which can take a year or longer) only take the antibiotics in life threatening situations because once you have beneficial floral your body can process vitamins and nutrients so that your immune system can take care of itself! So if its not a life threatening infection say to your doctor... "I'm going to see if my body can take care of itself this time"
Diet- Things to AVOID:
To get rid of the troublesome yeast in the first place, a diet is a huge part of it. This is where most people struggle but if you really want to get over anxiety it is a must. NO PROCESSED SUGARS is a big one... yeasts love sugars and it creates a more welcoming environment for them. Another thing to avoid is gluten yeast loves gluten.. It can be difficult to eat without gluten so try as much as possible but it is becoming increasingly easier especially at your local health food stores. Also no mushrooms, or vinegar (is acidic which is perfect environment for them) this includes things like mayonnaise, ketchup, certain salad dressings etc. Avoid excess alcohol. Avoid Yeast of course (breads that contain yeast, which are many). For a bit more detail of things to avoid you can just as easily google a yeast overgrowth cure diet.
Limit the fruit!- fruits have natural sugars in them and although they are not even close to as harmful as processed sugars, yeast still finds comfort in any sugar. It is still important to keep fruit a part of your diet but just limit it.. to one or two pieces of fruit a day.
Things to incorporate into diet: VEGETABLES... vegetables are so great for fixing nearly anything and everything in your body. They have an innate ability to enable your body to heal itself. Also what is very important to remember is that vegetables are natural alkalizes which help your body retain a balanced pH level which isn't only necessary in destroying harmful yeast, but also essential for optimum health! Another important addition to your diet are probiotics, pre-biotics, and beneficial yeasts. You can buy all of these online or at your local health food store. You can do a quick google search on great products that help get rid of harmful yeast and also create a favorable environment for beneficial bacteria. Standard Process Inc is my personal favorite for all of these products and they truly work. They have a website so you can do a quick google search for them.
All in all i hope i helped and please please please do some research for yourself. DO Not let anyone tell you what your body needs and then blindly follow them... that is a dangerous game. Also do not pay any attention to "Tink" who said your naturopath doctor is trying to scam you. It is not a pointless test if the doctor was trying to be thorough in trying to discover what is wrong with you. If the Dr had just assumed that you had yeast overgrowth, then that answer could have been warranted. In the end it comes down to you and you alone taking care of your body and putting in the things that will benefit you and your health. All drugs are, are chemicals... so what makes more sense putting chemicals in your body or putting nutrients and natural raw vegetation in your body like humans have done for over a million years.

Antibodies against yeast mean your body have fought candida before - not that you are allergic to it.
Practically everyone has those antibodies - it's a worthless test - and you are being scammed by the naturopath.

"Yeast" in your body would be nothing like yeast in bread or something, if that's what you mean.
I think "yeast" in everybody's body is a myth anyway, sorry. The medicines may work via some other medicine of course.
