What is a good brand of dog grooming clippers for a Maltese to groom with at home?
I have a elderly Maltese that I am not comfortable sending to the groomers anymore at his old age. I want to groom him at home. I have done his grooming myself in the past so I do have some experience. I am looking for a good pair of clippers that won't break my pocketbook. I have read you can find them cheaper on the Internet but I am not familiar with reputable companies here. Please help!
Professional groomers advise is welcome. Home groomers with a Maltese as well. Please also give me links to good clipper companies websites to check out if you know of any. Thank you!

Cheap clippers are a no no on a coated breed. I have an Oster A-5 Turbo 2 Speed clipper comes with a 10 blade they are really nice I have both Shih Tzus and Yorkshire Terriers and our pets are kept in shorter clips I can clip them down in about 10 minutes.
They are about $100 but they are a higher quality than the $50+ kits the pet-stores sell. Also the blades are detachable and it runs smooth and quiet and fast.

Oster or Andis are both good brands, as is Wahl. I think Oster is easier (cheaper) to get blades for. You will need a #10 blade, and maybe a #30- if you plan on shaving the face/feet/tail like a poodle, this is generally done with either a 10 or 30. (the larger the number, the closer the blade cuts.) If you want to keep the body close, then I would look at a #7f or a #4- You can buy the guide combs that go over the clipppers, but they cut unevenly, and can get tangled in the hair. If the dog has lots of mats now, I would look at trying to cut with scissors first, as the mats are hard to get out with the clippers. When using the #10 or #30 blade, you need to be careful, because the blade will get hot and can burn the skin. Make sure you check regularly. Especially if your dog is white, with pink skin, it's very sensitive. I would recommend getting 2 blades, and then you can change them out without having to stop and let the blades cool down. Also, take your time. Maybe even do short sessions with your baby until she gets used to being groomed. She will have to endure this for the rest of her time. If you make it a positive experience, then it will be easier on both of you then having to fight her every time! Good luck! I admire you for taking on the duty of grooming your new baby. You will be surprised at how much bonding this will afford the two of you!

You could consider getting a mobile groomer to come to you, that way, you could be with your dog while he's getting groomed. If you want to buy clippers, I suggest that you visit a site like amazon.com and look for clipper and read the reviews that other people who have those particular brands have written. That will help you to make a more informed decision about which brand you should go with.

for the price of a pair of clippers you could pay some one to groom the dog in the UK ihave some wahl clippers they were 60 pounds i groom my dogs myself,it would cost less than that to pay some one to do it and i would not recommend clipping a dog your self if you have never done so before

I have two toy poodles and used to have a shih tzu, and the best ones I have tried is WALL. The kit came with a DVD on how to trim different dog breeds, scissors, clippers with different lengths, and oil for the clippers, Best thing I have ever used.

The breed is NOT buzzed....only an occasional "sanitary"-which will take 5 minutes when done by a PRO & won't run over $300 for REAL clippers,blades,table,noose...

The Maltese is a long coated breed, not intended to be shaved like a Poodle. Coat maintenance involves daily brushing of a dampened coat and conditioner.
