Can an Inline-4 engine be used in an AWD layout if it is longitudinally mounted?

    Absolutely. The orientation of the engine is actually of NO practical importance other than to balance the vehicle and overall dimension when it comes to drivetrain.

    V6 and larger engines are usually longitidinally mounted because the engine don't fit "sideways", but they can always add a bit more room to the engine compartment lengthwise.

    In fact, it would make adding AWD easier by having more room for the second and third transfer case / differential. However, it would also make the car longer.

    Audi A4 are logitidinally mounted I4, and if equipped with Quattro, are AWD.
