I don't care about current popularity. So in other words, in the entire history of modern music, what music genre has brought in the most money?

Doesn't get any more profitable than good old fashioned sex, drugs, and rock n' roll. Rock music has been around for ages, and had the advantage of starting out in an era that actually spent money on music instead of just listening to it in the streets(classical much?). Even though currently, rap, hiphop, and r&b make up most of the world's money output for music, rock n' roll is still going strong.
