Metal Fans: Thoughts on the new Sigh album?
althought not bad, I wasn't really looking forward to this release as i felt the last two releases were abit too "straightforward" for Sigh...and thats not what made them the unique band they were. However, i was pleased after hearing the first track that this sounds more like the 1997-2002 era of sigh with the more psychedelic/jazzy/black metal combination that i like
here are a few tracks:
Somniphobia

MQ2: top 5 Sigh albums?
MQ3: top 5 Sigh songs
*** nice review..i pretty much have the same views of Sigh as you. although for me I'd rank their albums
Imaginary Sonicscape
Hail Horror Hail
Scorn Defeat - although not as different and more like pure BM, i enjoy the album
Scenario IV: Dread Dreams
Ghastly Funeral Theatre
Gallows Gallery just doesn't do it for me...its not that i dislike clean vocals, but it just doesn't sound right to me with sigh. I do think that musically thats a good album, but it just doesn't do anything for me
songs from above albums:

I actually listened to this album 4-5 days ago! and i was blown away by what felt like a big tank! This album is an ecclectic combination of an evolution in their sound from their previous album Scenes From Hell..combined with styles from all their previous albums...mixed in with snippets of almost every imaginable genre of music, all thrown into a concise and coherant wrok that flows effortlessly from style to style...If u ask me..This is their most promising album since Gallows Gallery..and gives Imaginary Sonicscape a run for it's money (not kidding!!) for existing Sigh fans..i'd say this is a must...i dunno if it would be advisable to suggest this album to a sigh beginner..but as for me, I have been in fits of laughter from how simply awesome this album is! :D
And what an album cover!!! Amazing!
AND!..some amazing guitar solos on this album ;)

It's getting late here, I'll try to answer tomorrow morning. I love the 2 Sigh albums I've heard.
Yeah, Sigh is one of my favourite Black metal bands. They've got a vibe all of their own, thoroughly original and experimental. I'm not huge on raw Black metal but I dig the Avant Garde, proggish stuff. BM imo works best when hybridized with Folk or laced with Proggy elements, creating a uniquely textured and well written song structure.
Two of the greatest things about Sigh is the variety of influenced and approaches (Jazz, Blues, Country, Psychedelia/ Prog/ Fusion/ Black metal?!?!?!) and that peculiar ghastly Japanese tone lol. I am a huge homie of Mirai's vocals and keyboard work (especially on Imaginary Sonicscape) and I absolutely LOVE Shinichi's guitar work.
One of my fave guitarists period. Very sledgehammer, yet classy riffs, fascinating licks and solos and tasty melodic leads. The way he uses his scales is nothing short of astounding, and somewhat rare in this age of guitar virtuoso's and shredders. Some of his stuff has that quiet distinct Gilmour-ish touch, magical and emotive.
Another great thing about Sigh is their ability to build walls of liquidized Melody along with the rhythm section and off the chains Organ/ Minimoog. What other Black metal band uses such a remarkable range of instruments as SIGH?!?!?!
For example on the new album, we have: alto saxophone, brass, piano, keyboards, sitar, tabla, tampura, jaw harp, glockenspiel, sarangi, clarinet, clarinet and trumpet.
Purgatorium, the opener is the tradesmark obligatory Sigh tune, with galloping drum work, searing melody and accentuating keyboard work. Nothing fancy except the catchy breezy Melody which I heard before. I think it's from VERSAILLES or at least inspired by them. Definitely the strictly Japanese touch of genius ;D
Somniphobia really marks the turning point with it's haunting oriental melody and the trademark orchestration. Like Mirai says “[W]e live in [the] 21st century. In Somniphobia isn’t avant-garde enough to scare people…” and the album revisits much of the earlier material.
Amnesia is the sax infused (and throbbing bass), SEXY track of the album, much like Soniscape's Nietzschean Conspiracy. Some Zappa there methinks and I really liked the youtube comment ~ "This is what Satan plays in Hell when he wants to get laid." Best song till now. Breathtaking colourful solo ^^
L'excommunication a Minuit is also quiet fun with it's Middle Eastern hooks, something I'd like Ashmedi of Melechesh to play :P there's also a one Minuit pause in each track for breathing space XD
The guitars lack that biting chilly tones of their earlier records as the orchestration takes precedence. This might or might not be a drawback but that's why you have several albums. The album might get pretty boring by the end of Amongst The Phantoms.
Equale's intro is very Jazzy and the guitar melody is very beautiful. I like the nimble keyboards as well and some notable simplstic double bass. The piano is quiet uplifting and simply makes me smile. The guitar synths and rhythm section are all fabulous here. The coda is compellingly haunting as well, if a bit creepy =P
MA: Thoughts?? Good album. Probably better than their last two but doesn't quiet touch their 1995 - 2005 which IMO was the golden age of Sigh. My favourite albums are these - all of which I absolutely LOVE them and are some of my favourite albums EVER ~
Gallows Gallery
Imaginary Sonicscape
Hail Horror Hail
Scenario IV: Dread Dreams
Ghastly Funeral Theatre
*** I think you already know my taste so I don't have to explain. I love the artwork on each of those, particularly your Avatar - ridiculously awesome!! I'm okay with the new album's cover art concept but not too fond of the execution. I dislike the detail.
MA3: Maybe I'll list my favourite from each (roughly cuz I don't remember) ~
