I want to send this letter to The University but need help sounding professional with my complaint?

long story short- I forgot an empty box in the Universities parking garage, and when i found out that they had bomb squad there inspecting it and the garage was closed i went to claim my box and apologize for the inconvenience and hopefully end the wait for students to get to their cars.

They called me into the office and I had no choice but to accept a Warning ( that goes on my record until i request it to be expunged a few years from now before I graduate) and I have to write a paper, do a workshop or talk to a mentor for the next 5 months 1 hour a month. I wont find out my specific punishment until next week. I dont agree at all with there tactics so I want to send this letter.

I would like to point out, that the University’s attempts at reprimanding a student and preventing any future mishaps is flawed. However, most of the time the system appears to work, there is one thing that I noticed while attending my appointment. When I was called into the office I was told I had a few options (none of which were optimal), the least severe was accepting a warning and complying with a simple request. However, I was not presented with an option to disregard the accusation. I was not asked to write a “10 page dissertation” to make up for my error, however the amount of stress that your system has put me through feels like I was just assigned a 10 page paper.

In fact, the way you have dealt with my case is actually counterproductive. If I were ever put in the same situation there is no way I would follow the golden rule of honesty knowing that I would end up breaking a student code of conduct – “disruptive behavior”; which is strung out so thinly that one could argue that even handing someone a sheet of paper could be considered disruptive behavior. The receiver of the paper could get a paper cut, and the obvious person to blame is the person who gave you the paper, right?

Of course not. Just as me leaving a box in Garage B was not with the intent to harm or disrupt any student, instead someone overreacted (with good reason) to the situation. Precisely why leaving the box in the garage was not knowingly or even unknowingly breaking a student conduct code. Instead the person that did the damage was the one trying to help, by calling an empty box a bomb. Because the person who discovered the box was trying to help they were not warned, however, when I tried to help by claiming that the box was accidently left behind and in no way a bomb I am receiving repercussions.
