can I use this ac adpter?

Well story short

I'm trying to help at work. a power supply with this spec went out.

switch mode power supply

24V ---1.7A

I can't find anything in that amp rating.

can I use a universal lap top power supply with 24V 4A 70W?

it will be powering up an electronic board that makes a set of L.E.D.s change in color and intensity(brighter and dimmer).

I really don't know how many L.E.D.s or any rating on them at all. only that a power supply with 24V 1.7A was powering the system.

my friend said not to use the universal one(he worked at a lamps store for a while) but I'm still doubtful about using the same one(can't find anywhere--new).

so am I doomed to keep looking for something that low on the Amps side?

I always thought that I could get away with the higher Amps as long as I keep it at the 24Volts.

T.I.A

Update:

The power supply is a 120VAC input to 48VDC output 4.x Amps

I can get a 24VDC output but my friend keeps on saying that 4A is going to create some current problems and that the L.E.Ds will be dimmer.or will not last as long.

Burning up the L.E.Ds is not an option given the they are hidden behind a 200+Lbs piece of glass.

I'd rather invest in a power supply than having someone replace the L.E.D+ power supply.

The only thing you don't say is if they are both 24volt AC or DC. If they are the same, you are ok though the 4 amp is way more than enough. You are right on the fact that the voltage is right, the amps has to be the sam or higher than the original. The only real exception is when charging a battery. In that case a lower amprage will just increase the charge time.

    You should be okay.

I would look for a smaller one, likey 2A.
