could my baby gecko be a male?
me and my mom are trying to figure out if the new baby gecko we got is a male or female. it looks like a female, but by the way its acting it seems like a male, we read that you cant tell when there baby's.
it doesint scramble away when i try to pick it up, and seems fearless of us, and never trys to run off my hand, and actually seems more interested in my hand. my female gecko however is the exact opposite and runs as soon as she sees my hand and always trys to run away.
hes a mac snow and hes very young, only about 2 inches or less (including tail) so im not sure in a magnifying glass would help with him being so small and young.
@ dave
unhealthy mentality?? i was just basing it on the thought of how male and female animals act.
like males are more protective and more likely to stand their ground, females more likely hide, etc. i know that's not true of all animals of course and i don't go basing that idea on people. geeze -_-

what type of gecko? and look under the gecko (you may need a magnifying glass) in between his back legs. Right in the middle where his two legs meet there may or may not be pre-anal vents. They will be in a line (extremely small, black dots, in a line. each on of the vents will be on its own indivual scale if you will). The description i gave you may not be very good, but just google it for your paticular type of gecko. if the pre-anal vents ARE there, you have a male, if they are absent, you have a female. (i have a gecko and a chinese water dragon, my gecko had pre-anal vents and he i most definately a male, and i do not know if the pre-anal vent thing applies to all lizards or just geckos, but when my cwd was younger it looked like she had pre-anal vents but i am almost 100% sure shes a female now that she has matured).

The behavior means very little. A make can be afraid and flighty, a female can be inquisitive and confident. Or visa versa. It depends on the individual gecko, how they were handled by the breeder, etc... The only time there will be different characteristics based on sex is once they are at least close to breeding size and placed together. You may wasn't to talk to a school counselor about why you think it can't be female simply because its confident and not scared of you, that is a very unhealthy mentality that you can hopefully work out.
So anyway, our could be male, or female. You have described nothing about the gecko. Your probably going to have to wait a few months until you can properly have out sexed.
