how can I train my dog from nipping?

She's 50 lbs and 1 year old. She gets so excited while playing she nips & pinches. Yesterday she drew blood from my friend who thankfully is still speaking to me. I've been calming her down before it gets to that point, but yesterday it happened so fast! Does anyone know of a technique that would help stop this behavior? She gets plenty of excercise & socialization.

Update:

Yes, she is a rescue. I've had her for about a month. She seems to have not known how to live in a house or with people. Also, it seems like she had to fight for food, by her gulping , then going after my other dog's food. I will Google bite inhibition. Thanks to those of you with serious answers.

She should have been taught bite inhibition when she was 2-6 months old! Is she a rescue?

Try this- play with her with a toy and if she nips or bites you, let out one high pitched yelp, stand up, and walk away. Ignore her for a little while. Make sure EVERYONE who plays with the dog does this. If she doesn't respond to this after a week or two, it's time to step it up. This time, each time she nips or bites, pull your hand away and give one firm "No!", and then ignore her like before. I didn't say yell at the dog, but make sure your tone reflects what you want. If after a week or two of this doesn't work, try the third thing (most don't get to this point at all, which is a good thing). This time, GENTLY grab her muzzle for a second or two, softly growl a "No!" and walk away and ignore her. It should not be painful and you are not meant to inflict pain. You are using the element of surprise and when she was a puppy her mother would do the same thing when the bit too hard.

    Good luck!!!

She is WAY too old to be doing that behavior. YOU need to stop it when it happens, YOU need to teach this dog bite inhibition. It'll only get worse if you don't.

Get a trainer, and Google "bite inhibition."
