Why won't the break lights come on?

Okay, here is a little more detail. The brakes light on the car won't come on at all when you stop on the brakes. However, if you turn on the head lights to the car, the brakes come on, but won't go off. So, I know the brake light bulbs are good. But they just won't come on if you apply pressure to the brakes. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you and God bless you Patrick.

a few possibilities. First check the obvious. Check the fuses. Check the turn signals.

But most likely the brake light switch is bad. This switch is usually under the dash and is activated by the brake pedal. Sometimes there are 2 switches. The other switch is what makes you press your foot on the brake to shift out of park.

When you turn the lights on, the taillights turn on, not the brake lights, so your test doesn't prove anything. They are not the same lights. A typical taillight bulb has two filaments in it, one for that turns on with the tail lights, and one when you hit the brakes. The brake light is brighter than the taillight. The latter may (or may not) also light with the signal or emergency flashers, this depends on the car, some cars have separate amber lights for signals/flasher.

Telling your year/make/model is often helpful, and would be in this case.

Bottom line - either you have two bad bulbs or the switch that activates the brake lights is probably bad.

Good question. I would have first leaned towards a bad brake light switch, but not knowing what your vehicle is I can't speculate any further than this, other than that something has been crossed when some wiring was done underneath the dash.

the change is in all probability worn and making touch under vibration, except that's the brake warning mild wherein your brake pads ought to be worn or your brake fluid point low.i anticipate you're actually not driving with the handbrake on.the handbrake cable would not desire tightening however the different slackening to treatment this form of challenge if the handbrake isn't liberating totally to that end activating the change .there's no warning mild that permit you already know your handbrake needs tightening
