Tom Lawrence.
I love the name Tom because its so simple, handsome, and it reminds me of Tom Sawyer. Lawrence because the name sounds sophisticated, and it has a cool sound to it.

I like it for most the reasons you address. It's simplistic yet sophisticated/intelligent. Another plus would be that it has no weak spot for being made fun of when your kid goes through school.
*edit* - The other people who answered have a point, Thomas does seem better than Tom. Tom can be used day to day but Thomas is better for the legal name I believe as well.

It's very cute, but I think Thomas Lawrence does sound better. Tom could be a more-so common nick name that he goes by, but I think Thomas Lawrence sounds amazing! Good choice!
