My phone stolen from room and sold - what can I do to get it back?
I'm at university and am away for the term times, and have returned to find that my 17 year old brother has taken an old phone (worth £500) and sold it without my permission. What can I do to get it back? Can I call the police? Can I get compensation for the stolen item? What can I do?

Too things you should know about me:
1.) I'm so old, I don't get the attraction of cellphones.
2.) I watch way too many crime scene investigation shows.
Now that I admit these things, it's time to ask my question. Don't cellphones have tracker chips in case they are stolen? If I were you, I'd call your phone company, tell what happened, and see if they can't tell you where you phone is. (Probably smart to call the cops if they can, since you don't want to take the law into your own hands.)
After all, your bro stole it from you, so chances are good, someone is using your minutes and then some for free, and you'll get charge for those with a reasonable expectation of, "Yeah. Sure. You don't want to pay for your overuse, because someone stole it." (Seriously, I believe this happened to you, but how often do cellphone companies hear that as an excuse?)
And, yes. Report your brother, and he will get in legal trouble, but I doubt he'll go to prison over this, unless he's broken the law before. Wat happens to your brother isn't your problem. He brought that on himself.Your problem remains your lost phone and the charges being racked up for 500 pounds.

Is phone insured?
if you report it to the police and are insured. then maybe you will get the money
from your insurance company
other than that you'll need to ask your brother to replace it
