Do Christians believe rainbows didn't use to exist?
It occurred to me that because in the Bible it says God made rainbows as a covenant between man to not drown us all again, does that mean Christians believe there weren't rainbows before that?
Differing views from Christians would be appreciated.
Volpe_42 - Really, you really believe that? It's astounding what you can get people to believe.
BATMAN - So you're saying that if before that I had sprayed some water in the air with a spray bottle, the light refracting from the little droplets wouldn't have produced a rainbow?
Joey - That's much more sensible, yet again it's unclear what Christianity is even saying here. Did they exist before that or didn't they? It doesn't say really.

Of course there weren't in the same way that carnivores were all vegetarian before the great flood and god telling them they could eat each other after the waters subsided. I do hope you are not trying to suggest that light refracting off water has always produced a prism effect seen as a rainbow. That is just ludicrous.

Rainbows didn't exist here on Earth till there were enough Water Molecules in the Atmosphere to bend the Sunlight into a Rainbow. Plus it is common scientific knowledge that Earth didn't ALWAYS have water on it.
So theoretically if the atmosphere before the Flood didn't have enough water in it to produce a Rainbow visible to the Human Eye, and the water that caused the Flood was introduced to Earth by Comets, there would then be enough water to produce a visible Rainbow.

1) does that mean Christians believe there weren't rainbows before that?
Perhaps not surprisingly, some Christians do believe that. However - clearly - an assumption is being made on their part (and on your part). This short article explains:

Exactly: the Bible **doesn't** say. Why, then, assume that rainbows did not exist before the Great Flood?

God said that the rainbow he showed Noah was a symbol of the covenant he had made. But that doesn't necessarily mean that rainbows had never existed before that.

According to the Hebrew Scriptures, God designated the rainbow to be a sign that he would never again destroy the whole world by means of a universal flood. The rainbow always existed (ever since there was a sun and rain). God merely designated it as a sign.

The great flood is basically undisputable. Every civilization on earth has the story of the flood. Even scientific evidence proves it.
8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 “Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”

Religious Books should be re-written, incorporating modern confirmable scientific data.
