Would it be worth it?

I'm looking to haul Oliver to a show this summer. Just a local schooling show. He's made a lot of progress and I want to show him off a little. I think he'd do really well in pleasure/equitation classes. The only downfall right now is that he doesn't have a lope down (yet). He has a great walk and a great jog, but the lope... is more like a barrel horse.

Here's where my problem lies. The show I'm thinking of going to is the end of July, so I have time to work on the lope more. They have walk/jog 13 and over classes for equitation and pleasure. So, basically, at this point, I'd be having him hauled about a half hour away for two classes. If we get the lope down, I could probably enter 5 classes (which would be worth it). There's no cross-entering allowed (of course). I can settle him into a nicely paced english canter (which would mean he could do open english pleasure/equitation, but not western).

Basically, at this point, should I even talk to his owners about hauling to a show this summer? I'd like to give them plenty of time to think about the idea (even though they would probably be all for it). But, since I'm not sure if we'll be prepared, I don't know if I should bother bringing it up yet.

Update:

The thing is, I have to take a day off work to go to a show (since I work weekends). Also, I'd have to make arrangements for transportation (and tack since I don't have any show appropriate tack currently).

I completely agree about it being a good experience for both of us (especially if I'll be able to show him more in the future), but this was never the owners' goal for him; sort of just my own agenda. If I go to a show, I want to have a serious day of showing. We're still having a lot of issues with the lope, and I really don't know if I'll be able to fix them well enough by them to be comfortable entering a class requiring it.

    I'd take him.

So what if you do pretty poorly in your classes? Point is that he's doing good, and it will be exposure for both you and him. Might as well get him used to the sounds and sights of a show now. It's not like you have a half-broke horse (from the sounds of your question) but rather a show horse in the making. I think a little bit of showing would be good for him!

Go, but I would never enter more than 3, maybe 4 classes per day. You want your horse to be fresh enough to really perform, and if you push too hard, all you'll accomplish is to sour your horse. Good luck getting that lope down!

I think you should go. It would definately be a good chance to get your horse ( and you) used to shows.

  • He'll get show experience regardless, so it will be an all-in-all good experience.
