How do I store my taters and onions, they ALWAYS seem to get moldy lately?

Hi, I am placing my potatoes in a wicker basket under the kitchen counter, by the next day they are soft and molding, I then moved them to the top of the counter and that is even worse! What's going on with my taters and onions. My house seems to be a normal temp bordering on the cold side. I learned my lesson about placing onions and potatoes together but what is happening?

How do you store your potatoes? I have been putting my onions in the fridge to keep them away from the taters. What type of bowl or basket should I use?

My hall closet is used as a pantry because it is cool, dark, and spacious.

Potatoes in a bin on the floor. Onions are kept on the opposite side, up high, in their original mesh bag, secured on a hook..

I shop every month or two (it's a large pantry) sending the kids for those items I absolutely must have between trips... I buy a lot of onions and potatoes at once, so keeping them fresh is important.

Each month to 6 weeks I toss out one or two onions and perhaps as many potatoes. Having gone through a period where it seemed absolutely everything spoiled, I am OK with this.

Use a vegetable rack. Have one shelf for onions, and place a piece of newspaper on the bottom, put the onions in, and put another piece of newspaper on the top.

Have another shelf for the potatoes, and either store them the same way as the onions, or even better, place them in some kind of hessian sack/bag.
