Why do capitalist economies try to block/contain communist economies?

i.e. the whole idea of containment of the communist countries (Soviet Union, for instance)?

Because the Communism of the Cold war was dictatorial, hugely oppressive and, al least at the beginning, was bend on World domination. It brutality killed millions of it's own people. Stalin starved 7 million Ukrainians to death. The containment was not so much due to the economic issues as it was the political and oppressive ones, although economics were related to the whole thing.

the soviet union was never a communist country. communist countries by definition dont trade...

Stalin set up Russia as pseudo socialist then appointed himself dictator at the top...thus nullifying any socialist or communist notions

It's the nature of power. Powerful capitalist institutions don't want any competition, a threat to their power.
