What would you do if you had a 5 hour layover at Newark Airport? Worth it to go to NYC?

We are flying to Germany via Newark and have a long layover. I'd love to hop into Manhattan because my husband has never been there and I've only been once many years ago. But is it worth it? If so, what should we do? We will have our 3 1/2 year old with us, too.

Update:

IF it's not worth it, then what could we do? We don't want to sit in an airport all that time (actually, total layover time is 7 hours).

If you have 7 hours and actually end up having 7 hours, you would be able to do it. You would probably want to have a car service scheduled to pick you up and be on your way. It will give you about 3 hours in the city. For the couple of hundred dollars to get to the city and back with the car service, not sure if it worth it. The train takes FOREVER = probably 1.5 hours; much longer than you think it will.

Maybe a better option would be to rent a cheap car or take a cab to Liberty State Park. It's on the NJ side of the river and has a much better view of the Statute of Liberty than the NY side. You could also walk around Hoboken.

No way is it worth it !!! You want to sweat and push your nervous system to the limit ? Yikes, and with a 3 1/2 yr old ??? I honestly couldn't think of a worse way to spend 6 hours. Relax, buy a book and chill out. You got a lap top ? Like to sip on a couple of drinks at the bar ? Shop in the many boutiques,..so much to do,..All common sense ways to pass the time. But trying to go into NYC and back in 6 hours is not one of them,...suicide would be preferable ! ( smile )
