Is it socialist to complain that the president isn't doing enough about oil prices?

First - the president doesn't control oil prices. Remember when gas was $4.21 under Bush? I do, and I know Bush had no control over it.

Second - if the free market effectively sets the price of oil then any government interference would be socialism - at least by conservatives' standards

there IS government interference in this market.

they're called "subsidies". right now you and i and every other taxpayer is paying the cost of drilling new wells even as the oil companies are making record profits AGAIN.

i don't expect the government - obama or congress - to do ANYTHING about gasoline prices at the pump, but i'd REALLY like it if the republicans (this started under bush during GOP control of congress) would not keep preventing obama from ENDING these subsidies.

the oil companies are making enough money to pay to drill their own damned wells. they don't need to keep picking my pocket to pay for what should be a legitimate business expense.

but i can tell by the fact that you're a conservative that you don't mind corporate welfare... you just can't stand the thought of your tax dollars being used to feed hungry children.

i wish you conservatives would just once apply your doctrine of "personal responsibility" to mega-corporations.

    .

Source(s): . edit to byzantine... sorry to burst your anti-obama bubble, but new well drilling is up over 10% per year than when bush was president. you clowns say "drill baby drill" while obama is actually DOING it. you just can't stand that he hasn't opened ANWAR... yet.

Are you sure the left thinks that the president can't control gas prices? Take a peak at this:

When gas prices DID spike, did Bush sit on his hands and do nothing? No. The left wanted him to open the strategic oil reserves (which would be a very small bandage on a very large problem). Bush went to the middle east nations and worked out deals with them for lower prices on oil and this helped in a big way bring the price of gas down.

You are only partially correct. The government does not "control" oil prices nor should it. However, what =this= government is doing to discourage oil exploration, forbid new drilling of known reserves, and continually hold a threat of punitive taxation over the oil companies certainly has the effect of driving up prices.

It is precisely =existing= government interference which =is= the problem.

I remember that when prices spiked after a storm knocked-out 1/3 of our system, you Democrats claimed Bush CONTROLLED the prices.

ALLOWING the market to work is not "government interference."

We're not producing in MOST of the KNOWN productive areas becasue it is FORBIDDEN by government fiat.

The GOP is the Oil Company party. What do the Tea Party Koch's do for a living? Iran?
