Look at how the top answerers and a couple of others have offered an answer.
They have argued that factual material does not require more than 1 or two answers unless someone is just trying to get points. Those of us who contribute to the sciences and math generally respect each other's work and won't add to it unless there is some mistake or sometimes because some steps are left out.
Religion and politics tends to get people's blood boiling and they cannot resist adding to the pot.
A far more interesting question is why don't askers choose best answers when there are 25 responses which doesn't agree with their premise? I had 25000 points in the subject areas I contribute to before someone in religion picked one of my answers as a best answer. I had over that when I was picked for marriage (which I sometimes wander into very late at night when I'm tired of numbers) of which I know something about since my wife and I have enjoyed each other's company tor 31 years. I've yet to have one of my political answers chosen, but I'll bet I haven't answered more than 20 questions.
There are level problems involved. Mathematics does not tend to get many people upset. Frustrated yes, upset no.

x = 1.5 about meaning that the average number of questions receives about 1.5 answers I would guess, but if you said it was more (or less) I wouldn't have a problem with your opinion.

As previously indicated, the answers in the politics and religious based forums are opinion based without any firm objective foundations. Maybe everyone has a "right" to an opinion, and many have no inhibitions about expressing those opinions, but the physical universe has no respect for any opinion not based on objective, demonstrable fact. Opinion simply doesn't cut it in the mathematics or in any hard science forum.

Well if you were ever in a math class, you would see very few were understanding the material well, while others were average, and some did not understand at all. So those who understood well would be the people answering
In simple words, other questions are easier to answer because it is your mostly your opinion, and math questions are usually problem solving.

Once someone answers a math question correctly, there's no point in anyone else answering it. Since there are no "correct" answers in the politics and religion sections, it doesn't matter how many people have already answered a question, other people can always chime in with yet another opinion.

Politics and religious answers are basically people's opinion. But here you need to come up with a solution using some method.

Because it's not opinion bases but a knowledge based section. Also, Yahoo needs to hire a set of Geek squad to increase popularity of this section!

People think individuals who like doing math are masochists, we individuals are rare.

Because with too many questions, the people answering get inundated and sometimes they do take time.
