when should I take my protein supplement?

I started using whey protein shake powder about one month ago. I usually take the recommended amount 20 minutes before all my exercise routines (maximum of 30 min home workout a 4 mile run every day).

I was wondering if the protein supplement is as affective when taken after the exercise than taking it before? When is it best to have it?

Any help would be appreciated!

    I'm no expert, but on the container of my supplement, in the directions, it advises that you take it immediately post-workout.
