Social Security benefits...is Direct Deposit now Required?

Recently applied for Social Security...the rep said I'd start getting checks in June. On April 1st I received a letter from Social Security stating that new rules require that all benefits must be paid by direct deposit. Is that true? I wasn't told that when I Applied...
