My memory is slowly deteriorating... I'm only 21!?

I know the old adage "use it or lose it" but does that apply to memory?

I've been having serious issues and they're getting worse.

I have a hard time remembering the names of people I've known for months, cook temperatures, stuff for school (I keep near-failing exams), and just plain forgetting.

Any suggestions? I'm starting on memory exercises but I'm scared that this is permanent damage.

Update:

I do not use any drugs, other than a Midol pill once a month to deal with period cramps.

I also don't really drink alcohol all that often.

I get a fair amount of exercise everyday. I could be eating more, but what I do eat is generally on the healthier side. I just can't afford to eat like I probably need to.

Update 2:

Also I'm not pregnant. There is the possibility due to the fact that my boyfriend and I have regular intercourse but this has been going on longer than just a few weeks, or even months.

Not to alarm you but this sounds fairly serious. But let me ask you this, and please do not be offended. Are you using any type of drugs, whether prescribed or not..And whether legal or not. Even a small occasional amount of marijuana can impair your memory. Also the same goes with any type of consumption of alcohol. Some people seem to have a collective effect of even consuming alcohol socially.

The only reason I ask these questions, because as a counselor (just retired after 30 yrs) you are taught to rule out things before narrowing it down and saying there is a big problem. You are right about the fact use it or lose it, the brain is a muscle and unless we keep challenging the brain it gets lazy and you know lazy muscles don't work well.

Do not wait until it is worse. If you can rule out any prescription drugs or alcohol. then it is time to see your doctor. Also one last question, are you or could you be pregnant. God Bless Reggie

Go to a doctor and ask him/her to check if you have any kidney and stomach infections. Drink a lot of water. Exercise regularly. Detoxify your body regularly.

One thing that worked for me immediately is taking concentrated Omege 3 and 6 capsules. After a week or 2 of taking 3 per day you'll feel less tired and your memory will improve.

    I hope this helps.

hhhmm very true .. they just turn up like noooo .. I think we should never think about them, but then again they are memories after all which gonna remain in your brain like for a long long time so there is nothing you can do, but distract yourself towards something else ... and this happens with me all the time .. i think most of my life I am living in my past .. sometimes i am like oohh i should be more present than I am lol Bq: Very few .. my childhood .. but again there is so much sad connected to it so i always try to distance myself from them .. Bq: Love experiences been the worst in my life .. then if it was my family, friends or a guy ... i dont love anyone no more .... everyone betrays and leaves!...

i dont think it's a permanent problem. Maybe you have lots of stresses and tensions. If it's so, try to not care hardly and not to think deep about the things that you are not supposed to and take everything easy.

there are certain holistic treatments for this issue. try googling "herbs that improve brain functionality". you could be over stressed, distracted or over-stimulated. try mediating and limiting your time in front of tv or computer.

some herbs: st. john's wart and fish oil both help.
