At what age should I clip my standard poodle's coat?
My standard is 5 and 1/2 months old ... is it time to clip his coat?
Thanks!
He is very used to bathing and trimming around his eyes and getting his nails clipped.

I have always taken my poodles to the groomer at 3 or 4 months. If nothing more than to get nails clipped, and a little brushing. That way they get used to going. The first time I take them I usually have given them a bath and they are dry, so it doesn't take so long for them. Then I usually stay with them while she grooms. The second time, about 6 wks later, I let them stay on their own. Make sure you find a good groomer that is kind and understands puppies. I have unfortunately taken dogs to some that are not the best and the dogs come out with a burn or scared and they don't want to go back. Needless to say, one visit is more than enough to one like that! If you don't have a groomer, ask around. I found the groomer I have through another friend that takes her dogs there. And as I said, stay with them the first time. A good groomer will be really gentle with your puppy, talking to them and praising them. Mine even gives little tiny treats for good grooming behavior. They make sure to take just a little off the nails so they don't nip the quick, and the puppy learns getting nails clipped is ok. They may not look the best the first couple times because as my groomer says, "it's like trying to clip a moving target!" LOL But, they learn the proper behavior. Mine all enjoy going to the groomer. It also helps if you brush them at home and play with their feet and nails so they get used to handling.

It may be a good idea to wait a little longer so it doesn;t get too worked up and then every trip to the groomers won;t be traumatic.
