Are shoe insole inserts for running a good idea?

My current shoes I use to run at the gym are showing their age. I was wondering if picking up a low cost insole would extend the life or if it would end up being more uncomfortable. I haven't used insoles in a very long time and never for exercising. Are they effective or should I just go buy a new pair of shoes ($70-90)? I'm not running marathons or anything like that, just trying to drop some weight and get into better shape so please don't suggest anything high end or expensive.

Update:

My experience with the inserts was mainly as a teenager when my mother bought what seemed to be a thin foam pad that we'd have to cut to fit the shoe. I mainly remember them ended up bunched at the toes and being more uncomfortable than helping most of the time.

Do you recommend a particular insole insert manufacturer if I go that route? The shoe (New Balance 473) is in decent shape (tread showing some signs of wearing but the rest of the shoe is holding up).

Shoes are the most important part of equipment for running.

running shoes last for approx 250 miles and once the sole is worn they should be changed.

You cannot afford to not change your shoes as worn out shoes will lead to injury and all the good work you have done so far will 'go to pot'.

any decent sport stockist will be able to Supply SOBATHANE heel or full insoles which will cut any jarring down by up to 95%.

any insole in the shoe when you buy or put in should not be removed as with age the cushioning reduces and shoud but new inserts when you but new shoes.

    Good luck!

Most running shoes are made to use an insert, either the one that came with the shoe or one you bought at a store or one that was custom made.

Shoes also need to be changed so if the shoe is worn out you need to replace it not just get a new insert.
