In the movie "the village" what is the significance of the color red, specifically the red berries?

The elders of the village have told everyone that red is the "bad" color, most likely to try to discourage them from going outside the village collecting berries or flowers. They also put a red hood and cape on the monster they create as "those they do not speak of" so that just seeing the color will cause them to b afraid and stay in the village
