Advice from BF mums who did formula top ups?

My daughter is 6 wks old now and is breastfed every feed but has been having formula top ups since a week old on advice from midwife. She wasn't pooping or gaining weight so i was advised to top her up. She has just hit 3.9kg's today which is normal newborn size an since she is healthy an a good weight now i would love to stop formula.

Have any of you been in this situation and successfully weaned off formula to exclusively BF and how did you do it?

I can sit an feed her for 2 hrs straight and she will still scream like she's starving, i'll hold off bottles all day but she get's so worked up an screams the house down and i end up giving her a bottle at evening so she is full and satisfied.

Would love any advice or help you ladies can give me. Thanks :)

Find a lactation consultant or call La Leche to get some proper freaking breastfeeding advice. Becuase the advice to top up with formula is horrible. It causes a downward slide, your baby nurses less from you, you make less milk, you need to give more formula, your body makes less milk.

My guess is that something your diet is upsetting her tummy, not the lack of milk.Formula is harder to digest that is why it seems to keep her satisifed longer, it's like if you eat a salad for dinner, no matter how big you won't have that FULL feeling. But if you eat something heavy like a huge cheeseburger, you get that heavy feeling.

That midwife gave you horrible advice. Stop the formula and nurse as often as possoble. Some babies cluster feed, they eventually slow down around 3 months. Just hang in there and toss out the formula garbage.

yes i know exactly what your going through I also had that experience. you need to buy a breast pump and every time you breast feed you should pump both breasts for 15mins each side after the baby feeds so you can stimulate your breasts to produce more milk. if that isn't enough then in between feedings pump on both breasts for 15mins each side and feed the baby the milk you get out of a bottle until you produce enough milk to satisfy your baby. it will happen i promise just don't give up.
