Want to do smoke shots with Nikon D40?
As I'm starting to get more creative I would like to start doing some smoke shots with my Nikon D40 (with an 18-55mm lens). I want to get an interesting photo of people doing the shotgun trick (blowing smoke out of one mouth into someone else's) Any tips I should know that will help me?

That's a tricky question to answer, because the area of the picture that is in focus front to back (the depth of field) depends on both the focal length of your lens and aperture setting. The best thing to do is to experiment a lot. Put the camera in aperture priority mode (the A setting) and then try different zoom lengths and aperture settings. Once you start to figure out how zoom length and aperture setting change depth of field, you'll have an idea of how much depth of field you need to keep the toddlers in focus and keep everything else out of focus. There are whole webpages devoted to depth of field, so there's plenty of reading available if you are bored. However, there is no substitute for experience.
