why would my credit score go down?

I recently started monitoring my credit score. Today I noticed it went down several points for no apparent reason. I didn't have anything negative happen and paid all my bills on time. My credit card balance is lower than last month. If anything, I would have expected my score to rise. What gives?

Even though your current credit card balance is lower then last month, did you make a large charge on that previous statement period. If one makes a large charge (above the $300 range) then ones score may take a little hit.

This has happened to me when I charged $850 one month. It pushed my debt utilization ratio up a little but once I paid it down when I received the statement, my score went back up a month later.

There really is no reason to check your score so frequently. Once a year, if even that often, is more than enough. Besides, unless that score came from MyFico.com, it's worthless. Creditors use FICO. Third party monitoring services use Fakko -- some literally just make up a number.

Scores fluctuate a few points constantly -- even from morning to evening. It all depends on exactly what shows on your credit report when the requested. Could be one of your cards hasn't updated yet.

Don't obsess over your score. Just pay all your bills on time and check your credit reports annually for accuracy. Your score will take care of itself.
