How to hack a computer?

Of course I'm asking this knowing the risks of hacking other people without their consent and all that bull. I'm not planning on wasting time on that. I'm asking because I took a course of network administration in college but I never learned too deep on security, and I would like to practice on my own LAN. So I know the terms like port scanning and all that but I've never been able to get into one of my computers. Can somebody tell me how to do this?

There are several approaches to this. Which approach to use kind of depends on the system and network. You seem like you are a little technically inclined so I'll refer you to www.backtrack-linux.org, or if you are not familiar with linux at all, you should probably try using mint or ubuntu for general use before taking a crack a backtrack.

Use there forums and wiki for in depth information. It looks like your looking for more than just a step by step process to exploit a computer, which is a good sign xD. I'm sure you will find those resources useful.

@ Dominik, No lol. certain configuration (particularly generating keys via gpu) can easily generate 10s of thousands of keys a second. Even a high level scripting language like python can guess a character key in less than a minute. Programs and scripts play a big role in hacking, especially concerning information gathering and cracking.

Hacking is 90% wit and 10% computer skill... there is actually no program for generating password(except brutus or something like that...) But it would take years to generate even a 4 letter password with whole keyboard characters...Think of some guys use brains instead of programs to get to another computer... :)

I went to tafe college to do computer courses and they don't teach hacking there either, so you on your own, maybe cause it is illegal??
