Buying a dual sport vs buying/converting a dirt bike?
Say I like dirt bikes...and want do drive one on the street...
Should I buy a dual sport for 4000 or a dirt bike that is 3000 with similar qualities and convert it to be street legal?

Depending on the state you cannot register true dirt bikes. Bikes have a certificate of origin that states "For Off-Road Use Only." If so, in many states, you cannot obtain a title and registration and plate.
Suggest looking for a Suzuki DRZ Supermoto.

This would depend on how complicated you state makes it. Buying a dual sport is more straight forward and will have all the right features for street riding. The only reason I could see this making sense is if you live near an riding spot and want to make an MX 450 into very dirt biased dual sport.

Depends on where you live. In some places like where I live that conversion is easy, little more than adding a mirror and a horn and then an inspection at the DMV. In others like California impossible because of emissions.
If you are in between and have to buy a kit, you won't be saving money, but will end up with a street legal full on dirt bike.
Don't listen to bikers when you have a motorcycle question.
