If you are in the US taking law enforcement classes in college is worthless. You will get all the proper and correct LE classes you need to start when you go through a real police academy. So unless you are in a state that allows you to go to an academy on your own and the 2 years are spent in a community college combo police academy.
Otherwise go to college, Major in anything, no police departments cars and they do not rank you higher on a list of hires because yu took law enforcement classes in college.
A cop needs more general knowledge. A cop needs to learn how to use their critical thinking and logic skills.
So go to school, get at least 60 semester hours from an accredited college, keep out of trouble, get into and keep in good shape. When you are approaching 21 start to look at the recruitment web sites for the department you may want to join to se what their specific requirements are and if they are hiring.
If you go to work, even par time, try to find a job that puts you in contact with the public. Show those who hire that you really do care and find some volunteer work that int rests you in your community.
That makes you much more attractive to any departments hiring than going to a non police academy school for law enforcement or criminal justice classes or degree.

;â¥Good luck!
your more likely to get highered if you show you had some type of experience. Join explorers or CHP [California, Highway, Patrol] They take people 15-21 you get to ride along with real cops give DUI tickets and help crime scence investigations by doing fingerprints dusting taking pictures...ect you will be doing many paperworks but everyday you are trained practice shooting and correct ways to arrest a suspect. Im in the CHP &&' it is a great experience(: i want to be a cop to. and also be a correctional officer you will work part time in jails and its a easy job to take while in college. Prepare for the amount of work you will be doing MANY MANY MANY tests! and i suggest you try && get as fit as possible before you go too the police academy they make you run 7-20miles a day also challenge you on ure uppers body strength. Get ready to study alot read those books! &&' goodluck(:

You're question is a little broad, but I'll give it a shot. One, the work is ninety-five percent boring and five percent utter terror. Two, practice, practice, practice with your weapon; take care of it and it will take care of you. And finally three, it's just a job like any other. The big plan at the start of your shift should be to make it to the end of your shift. When you go home, kiss the wife and kids, have a beer and watch some television.

Everyday is differennt some are fun and some are boring. Court and paperwork is not the fun part.
Good idea to join the police academy and volunteer for the department and take a ride along aswell.

Try being a police aid first and that would give you the ins and outs, it's as close to hands on you will get with out being a actual police! And you will be first up for the police academy after being a police aid.
