Atheists/Christians/Other: How would you react if one of your family members told you you were gay?

Imagine that on your sixteenth birthday your parents summoned you the table and revealed to you that you were gay. This is something they had kept from you until you were old enough and mature enough to understand what it meant, but now that you're becoming an adult it is time for you to know. You're gay, and you have to start dating other people the same sex as you. How would you react?

um...i dont think you understand how being gay works. other people don't tell you that you are gay. you tell you that you are gay. you are either gay or you aren't.

Awww bless. You don't really understand what "being gay" is, do you?

Your sexuality - gay, straight or somewhere in between - comes from within. It can't be allocated by your parents, preacher, government or other third party. They might be able to force you to comply with some form of sexual practice - but that's not the same as making straight people gay or vice versa.

If you're gay, you're gay. If you're straight you're straight. That's something you just know.

Saying and knowing are two different things. People can spew whatever they want out of their mouth. If it isn't true, it will eventually be discovered. So, I don't care. I can only control what I do. I cannot control what other people do. You just have to worry about the things that you can control. You can control yourself, but you cannot control other people. Lies are lies. Any liar will be revealed. It just happens. That's the way it is.

Earlier I asked "Do you believe in God?" you were one of the people who provided me with a justified, rational answer, and being on the internet, that is in itself a virtue. Thank you to no end. I am glad to see that there are people in between the ignorance of both sides of the argument.

This is bizarre. Why in the world should the parents know and the kid not know? And what would be the purpose of telling the kid they have to date only those of the same sex.

    Your question doesn't make sense.

And if you substituted 'heterosexual' for 'homosexual, 'straight' for 'gay', and 'opposite sex' for 'same sex', it would still make just as little sex.

    (Which may be your point.)

I would scold them for lying and go out with some girl. Its the manly thing to do. The only reason why someone would be gay is if they were raped by someone, or emotionally abused by their parents or bullies at school.

I would probably know it before they did, but if that DID happen, I would tell them that THEY could start dating people of the same sex, but I would not! "IF" they could possibly ever happen, I would thank them but tell them no thanks, that I had become a Christian and that if I couldn't date females, I wouldn't date at all, I was going to be Faithful to God.

I decide what I am just like everybody else. It's a ridiculous notion that anyone could keep sexual orientation a secret aside from the person who chooses their preferences. This is a pretty stupid question all religion aside.

It wouldn't make any sense given my own personal experience and what I know I'm attracted to. I'd probably look awfully confused.

Would you mind telling us where you're going with this question?

Pardon me, I usually just past stupid questions up, and let people with stupid answers, do so. But this is just about the worst question that I have ever wasted my time to read, much less answer.

I would ask them why I had been jerking it to dad's playboys since I was 12yo and why I had absolutely no attraction to males, if I am allegedly gay.

In other words, I would question being told this.
