Woman hair in the Military....HELP?

I have heard that womens have to have their hair cut off in the military, specially in the Navy because you dont have time to manage your long hair in boot camp. The thing is if you have corse, curly frizz hair it's worst to have it short because the more short the more difficult to manage the hair (since they say it has to look professional). I was wondering if they are allowed to wear a bun or they have to cut it off anyways.

If it's not because of the time you don't have for your hair then what is the real reason?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure the Navy is the only branch that requires you to cut your hair. It makes sense being in and out of the water, and the general care of constantly wet hair. Great Lakes can get quite cold and wet hair will kill you. The other branches simply require your hair to be kept off of your collar.

I'm not sure where others are getting their information but no, the military CANNOT force you to cut your hair. They can recommend it but the decision is up to you. However; your hair must be tightly wrapped up in a bun and off your face and neck so that it does not get in the way.

I have two female cousins in the Navy, my uncle does recruiting for the Navy, my husband is in the Army and my best female friend is also in the Army.

yes the Navy WILL cut it off to above the shoulders. they don't give a flying leap about coarse or curly or whatever. you may grow it back out once you arrive at A school.

if you are AA you may cornrow it tight against the scalp.

and yes it is a time/hygiene issue. it also serves to remind you you are no longer an individual, but part of a larger team.

I don't believe it's a time issue, I know in Canada it's main reason is so hair does not interfere with safety equipment, gas masks, helmets etc. Of course it's also to be kept neat and tidy and for appearances. Shorter hair is easier to keep neat and easier to take care of.

Are you looking to join if not then don't worry about it. If you are looking to join best place for any INFO is your local Recruiting Office.

no you do not have to cut off your hair but they do prefer it to be shorter like shoulder length or less. you will be required to keep it pulled back or in a bun if it is long enough to do so. your hair will be the least of your problems in boot camp you dont have much time for showering or to shave at all you will want to keep it up and out of your face for the sheer fact that it keeps it out of your way and looks nasty if it was down.

Call a recruiter and find out what the standards are before you listen to hearsay.
