It is difficult to assess exactly what the approach to the situation in Syria might be. A military intervention of any sort would be a highly complex endeavour invariably resulting in the loss of at least a few thousand innocent civilians, but it may also help to accelerate the downfall of the Assad family, thereby staving off even greater numbers of casualties. Providing arms and financing to Syrian rebels is a risky move, not only for the aftermath of the revolution but for the region as a whole. Although most of the protesters are peaceful people who are demonstrating for freedom and opportunity, there are some fundamentalists in their midst; it may not be such a good idea to provide them with the means to wage a sort of Jihad against whatever transitional council is installed after President Assad flees power. Economic sanctions against the state have had the effect of crippling the Syrian economy and preventing the government from expanding their crackdown into a multifaceted operation against several different cities at once, instead focusing their energies on one or two areas at a time. Iran has circumvented these sanctions by smuggling funds into Syria, thus increasing the longevity of the regime. Standing by and doing absolutely nothing would be neglecting the responsibility of good people to do something about what happens to others around the world. The Syrian people would never forgive us if we sat by and did nothing.

All things considered, I think the international community should consider implementing two possible options to aid the Syrian uprising: 1) The establishment of buffer zones at the Turkish, Israeli, and Jordanian borders; and 2) establishing a naval blockade against Iranian shipments in the Eastern Mediterranean, an aerial blockade along the border between Iraq and Syria, and another aerial blockade on the Syrian-Lebanese border to prevent Hezbollah forces from entering the country. It'd be tough, but it can be done. Hopefully it would be to the benefit of the Syrian people and the whole Middle East in the long run.

None. The protests in Syria are being used by NATO countries to destabilize the country and further their own interests, which have nothing in common with those of the Syrian people. It's just like what we've seen in Libya, where perhaps legitimate protest was co-opted by Western countries, turned into a bloody civil war, and ended with a Western intervention that cost thousands of lives. There is no "freedom and democracy" in Libya now, and the human rights situation has gotten worse, not better.

The state department should be looking for new markets in the east for US goods and services, once the conflicts have finished there will be lots of civilian and defence contracts up for grabs. SD should be laying the ground work for a new era of unprecedented export markets into Syria.
