Is 80000 words a good length for my novel? I am thirteen years old.?

I am at 56000 words so far in my novel, but I have been filled with disconsolation recently because I just haven't heard about many thirteen year olds who get anywhere with their writing. I know the content is more important than the word count, but is this a good length anyhow?

Whoa! I'm 13 and I write stories, but I'd never wrote something that long!!! Never, ever limit yourself, ever!! Write until you have no imagination left, that's what I'm doing, but I never have the Patience to finish any thing so I'm currently doing five stories at one time, I think it's amazing that you have written so much and think that you shouldn't limit yourself.

    Sounds Amazing!

My dad was writing a book (non-fiction) and the publishers said it had to be a minimum of 50,000 words, to look thick enough on a shelf to attract buyers.

You are right that content is more important though. Go onto a self publisher site (lulu for example) and upload the book and it will tell you how thick it would be, then compare it to other books. If you want to make it thicker consider making the page size smaller.

Good luck with your book, remember the content is most important but a publisher may also look for a certain thickness to help it look good on a shelf.

That's pretty much the sweet spot for first-time novelists. It's only the ones with established reputations who can get away with 100,000+.

I'd advise you to just keep writing until you feel it comes to a natural conclusion. Then make the necessary cuts. You're doing this to express yourself, right? Worry about publication and reception later. For now, you're an artist, not a book salesperson.

    Best of luck.

A novel needs to be as long as it needs to be.

    There's no limit :)

Apart from your imagination and will to write.
