Why do people treat nationality as an accomplishment?
You hear someone say they're proud to be American/Canadian/Australian/etc. What's up with that?
No one gets to decide where, how or to whom they are born. Unless you moved there from someplace else, being your nationality is not something you did. And as for your country's accomplishments in history, it doesn't really make sense to take personal pride for something that other people did before you were born, that you personally were not involved in.
If you love and are proud of your country, and you're happy to have been born there, wouldn't it be more accurate to say you're grateful to be American/Canadian/Australian/etc?

Same reason half a billion people watch the superbowl. Everybody loves the superbowl for no other reason than everybody loving the superbowl. Not liking ubiquitously favored institutions will get you pushed to the fringes of society about as quickly as running around naked out side your house and cursing at traffic.
