How do people get enough experiance in welding to be good enough to apply for a job?

I did a bit of welding when i was a car mechainc and i think it would take me half a year to a year of practice to be good at it.

If you went on a collage course how could you get enough experiance to be good enough to apply for a job?

It's all based upon a certificate. There are several companies specializing within the field of welding, and by paying a certain fee you could be taken up for a test and get a final certificate. Welding is large area of expertise, since you have everything from different types of welding (TIG, MIG, ...), materials you weld on (steel, aluminium, ...) etc. So a certificate is the only way for you to show an employer your area of expertise within welding.

My advice then is to contact someone distributing welding certificates. You often have to do a written test as well as the practical test to get the certificate, and as I've said earlier it costs. How costly it is depends on how advanced the welding type is.

Try for an apprenticeship or a labouring job in an engineering works. Tell them you like welding and would like to learn more.
