My car has no power at all until I plug in jumper cables or a booster back?

Just recently picked this car up, it's a 99 Dodge Neon with the SOHC, anyway. The car was running fine until this evening when it literally had no power at all, including the door lights and all. So I assumed the battery was completely dead, although not sure why, I did jump it and as soon as I connected power to the battery, everything lit up. However, it did take a while to start. After that, if you turn it off, it goes back to not having any power. I'm assuming its the alternator? But I'm looking to get some additional input because I don't know a lot about Neons or cars in general.

Maybe it could be the battery? I don't really think so because when I give it power it does take it, I just think it's using all the battery when running and thus its drained when the key is turned off.

Thanks people!

If the car is used, that's probably your cue to just buy a new battery... But if it's new, I'd go back to the car dealer and spill some coffee on his lap and say WHAT THE HECK IS THIS!? I WANTED A BRAND NEW CAR NOT SOME 2ND HAND BLOCK BUSTER CAR!

if the car runs OK it can't be the alternator if the battery is dead as the alternator is providing the power get them both tested - probably the battery is dead or needs distilled water top up
