Find an equation of the line that has a y-intercept of -2 and is perpendicular to the graph of 3x+6y=2

- 9 years ago
First, you need to find a point and the slope
Point (y-intercept already given)
(0, -2)
Slope (perpendicular to 3x + 6y=2)
6y = -3x +2 --> divide both sides by 6
y = -3/6x + 2/6
y = -1/2x + 1/3
m = -1/2x
Perpendicular slopes are negative reciprocals so..
--> m = -1/2x
perpendicular slope = 2
Now find the equation using this formula:
y- y1 = m (x-x1)
y - (-2) = 2 (x-0)
y + 2 = 2x
Answer:
y = 2x - 2 in slope intercept form
2x - y - 2 = 0 in standard form
